Role of Volunteers

"A nation that rests on the will of the people must also depend on individuals to support its institutions in whatever ways are appropriate if it is to flourish."
-- Thomas Jefferson, 1812

Volunteers are ambassadors for the Boy Scouts of America, and bring to this role an abiding respect for the Boy Scouts of America's history and traditions. At the same time, they carry the message of the Boy Scouts of America's future--a vision for bringing the Boy Scouts of America forward into the 21st century. Volunteers take the Boy Scouts of America's message into the field to ask Scouters and friends to engage in a relationship of support and involvement that helps the Boy Scouts of America achieve its highest aspirations.

Volunteers augment the Boy Scouts of America's fund-raising efforts in three important ways. First, they help the Boy Scouts of America extend its reach. Without volunteers, the Boy Scouts of America would be hard-pressed to cover groups of Scouters and friends across the nation, and indeed, around the world. Considering the scope and complexity of Boy Scouts of America efforts, volunteers help the Boy Scouts of America conduct the thousands of requests for support that are required. Boy Scouts of America staff would simply be unable to reach the large numbers of Scouters and friends effectively without the involvement of volunteers.

Scouter volunteers also help reconnect one another with their Boy Scouts of America experiences or deepen their existing relationships. Through their own enthusiasm and involvement, volunteers help motivate Scouters and friends. They share a common bond and make sure through dialogue that potential donors express their interests, give voice to their concerns, and understand the importance of their support.

Finally, volunteers who serve as the Boy Scouts of America's ambassadors over time tend to become synonymous with the Boy Scouts of America. They go beyond representing the Boy Scouts of America. They come to personify the Boy Scouts of America as emblems of its extraordinary past as well as its future aims.

Volunteers provide a strong foundation upon which fund-raising, outreach, and Scouters activities are built. Nothing is accomplished without leadership, and our volunteers are role models of commitment, involvement, and accomplishment. They exude an enthusiasm that becomes contagious and engages the valuable time, energy, and support of the Boy Scouts of America's and its friends.
