2013 National Jamboree
Jamboree registration is finally here!!
Ok… What is it? The National Jamboree is a ten day camping and high adventure experience with 40,000 close friends from all over the nation and a few international visitors thrown in as well.
Awesome… Where is it? The Summit: Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia. Be a part of this historic National Jamboree. It will be the first to take place in the new, permanent home of all future BSA jamborees and our newest High Adventure Base.
Sweet… When is it? July 13-24, 2013.
Cool… How much is it? The cost for Suwannee River Area Council Jamboree participants is $1950.00. With a $250.00 deposit due within 14 day of acceptance to the Jamboree contingent.
The Suwannee River Area Council is now accepting applications to fill its Jamboree Scout troop of 36 youth and 4 adults. (A note to Venturers: We are considering a “patrol” of 8 Venturers/2 adults, in addition to our Scout troop, so Venture youth and adults, if you are interested in attending the Jamboree, please sign up and if we have enough interested, we’ll make that happen). After our units have been filled, a standby list of alternates will be established.
The Jamboree is open to all qualified scouts and adults (A qualified Scout has: completed the 6th grade, or will be at least 12 years old and a 1st Class Scout by June 1, 2013, but not have reached his 18th birthday by July 24, 2013 and lives and abides by the Scout Oath and Law). A note to 2nd year Webelos Scouts: Many of you will be eligible for participation in the Jamboree experience with our Scout troop. So, sign up today, so you can assure your space with our contingent for this historic Jamboree!!
The Jamboree contingent will leave July 13, 2013 and travel by bus to The Summit. Along the way, we will visit such places as the Georgia Aquarium and do exciting things such as whitewater rafting on the Ocoee River and some caving in Tennessee and more! After a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the Jamboree, we will return home on or about July 24, 2013.
You must complete an online application. Applicants will need to use their BSA ID NUMBER to complete the application at the Summit web site. Your BSA ID number can be found on your Membership card. If you do not have your membership card, please contact your Scoutmaster or the Council office for assistance. Youth will need parental assistance in applying for the Jamboree. This application does not guarantee you a position for the Jamboree, but does get you started on the process to be approved as a participant.
To create your Jamboree online account and get started go to the Jamboree signup page (https://summit.scouting.org/services/en/pages/CreateLogin.aspx ) now!
You will also need the login and password that you create to access your account in the future, so make sure to make a note of it. If you already have a “My Scouting” account, you can use that to sign in and sign up. Adults Leaders please also follow the link and register via the online system. For more information on the adult selection process, you may also contact Ken Griffin, SRAC Jamboree Coordinator via e-mail at kgriffin239@comcast.net , but we do need you to register.
We are looking for committed youth and adults who have a personal desire to attend the Jamboree, a high maturity level, good team spirit & work ethic and a commitment to abide by the Jamboree Code of Conduct at all times. Those that are selected to be part of the Jamboree Contingent will be advised within two weeks (usually less) of their acceptance, via email. Adults will take a bit longer as we will want to schedule a time to "interview" potential candidates (this will take place in mid-December).
While we will happily accept full payment, quarterly and monthly payment plans are also available to suit your financial needs. The jamboree fee covers jamboree participant fees, all meals while at jamboree, transportation, tour admission fees, lodging, insurance and more. Meals during travel are not covered in the fee and will be the Scout’s responsibility (these will be low cost options, such as McDonalds or Golden Corral type fare).
Some examples of additional items that will be need are 2 complete Boy Scout uniforms, sleeping bag, spending money, personal items etc. The Jamboree is providing all troop gear, cots and tents. Complete details will be provided at our first Contingent meeting in the late winter/early spring timeframe.
All participants will sign and agree to live by a Jamboree code of conduct, be prepared physically, obtain scoutmaster approval and select a payment plan once accepted into the contingent. All participants will also submit a completed National Jamboree Medical form signed by a licensed physician and indicating compliance with specified immunizations, as well as attend an the initial contingent meeting in the late winter/early spring and 2-3 overnight training encampments in late 2012/early 2013.
We are excited and looking forward an awesome experience that we all can look back on and remember as a bright spot for the rest of our lives. More general Jamboree information can also be found at: http://bsajamboree.org, as well as our links to the left of this page. By the first of the year, we’ll also have our Jamboree Facebook page up and running, where we’ll keep you informed of all the latest happenings and breaking news, so watch for the announcement soon!
