Advancement

Advancement is the process by which youth members of Scouting America progress from rank to rank and is the method by which we promote and encourage the ongoing involvement and commitment that keeps members coming back for more. It works best when it is built into a unit’s program so that simply participating leads to meaningful achievement and recognition—and to a continually improving readiness for more complex experiences.

The Scouting advancement program is designed to encourage the natural interests of a youth in an organic way. Each of the ranks and awards in Scouting has its own requirements. As a scout advances through the ranks, requirements are progressively more challenging, matching the increased skills and abilities of the scout as they grow older.

There are other awards and recognitions that Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA and Venturers can earn as they participate in Scouting. From sports and academic beltloops and pins for Cub Scouts to Aquatic and outdoor recognition for Boy Scouts and Venturers. There is a lot to learn and do in Scouting.
